Additional Information
Terramycin® Ophthalmic Ointment
What is the difference between the Turkish Terramycin and the Zoetis Terramycin manufactured in Switzerland for sale in the USA?
Well, the first thing is the price. Why pay $24.00 and up (USA/Switzerland) for the same product, for approximately $9.50?
For over three years, beginning in 2011, Pfizer USA left American pet owners high and dry by halting the compounding of
Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment, while Pfizer Animal Health USA morphed into Zoetis Animal Health.
(I assume they had a great deal of paperwork to sort and that is likely what halted production.)
Same company, different name, but the same products...
The first time we learned of Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment was when we were living in Bulgaria in 2006 and our vet gave us a tube of Terramycin compounded by Pfizer, Istanbul, in the now familiar blue box and tube and the same ointment we sell at Eagle's Sparrow.
When we returned stateside and still had a need for the Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment for our
beautiful Persian cat, we couldn't find it anywhere. We tried other products, but they all failed miserably.
Finally, in desperation, we contacted our Bulgarian veterinarian and asked if he could send us a few tubes of the Terramycin eye ointment,
explaining our Sasha was suffering because nothing else worked like the Terramycin on his eyes.
After several months when it became apparent that the Terramycin eye ointment had fallen into that
endless hole of over-the-counter medications that suddenly disappear off the shelves,
we decided to contact Pfizer, Istanbul through our veterinarian.
We reached an agreement and began selling the Turkish Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment.
We had hundreds of orders in a matter of weeks and thus the trend began.
One thing we noticed that was in fact different about the Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment from Istanbul,
(other than the blue box instead of the yellow) was that the
Pfizer / Zoetis USA's compounding of Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment uses a yellow dye:
"Terramycin (oxytetracycline HCl) is an antibiotic, bright yellow in color, possessing potent antimicrobial activity,"
a completely unnecessary additive, whereas the Turkish compound is free and clear of any excess ingredients.
Why on earth would anyone use a dye in an eye ointment used for bacterial infections?
Harmless? Maybe, but why add something that has no medicinal benefit?
The USA allows a host of preservatives, additives, dyes, by-products and fillers the EU (and Turkey which follows EU laws) do not allow, by law.
Do you want yellow dye in your tube of Terramycin and pay twice the price?
Personally, I would never purchase from the USA distributor (Zoetis) again, solely because they left the USA without Terramycin for 3 years.
That is complete disregard for millions of customers and more so for their pets and livestock.
As Elie Wiesel once stated: "There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest."
By the way, the USA Terramycin (yellow box) now available is being manufactured in Switzerland, NOT the USA as many would believe:
